Why the Hugo Spritz is the Ultimate Summer Cocktail

Hugo Spritz

Originating from the South Tyrol region of Northern Italy, this refreshing aperitif is a delightful floral alternative to the bolder Aperol Spritz. With its delicate blend of elderflower, fresh mint, and bubbly Prosecco, it is the ultimate light and breezy summer cocktail.

Prep Time: 5 mins Total Time: 5 mins Servings: 1

Ingredients

  • 1 fluid ounce elderflower syrup (such as Monin or D’arbo) OR St-Germain liqueur
  • 4 fluid ounces Prosecco, chilled
  • 1 fluid ounce club soda or sparkling water
  • 1 sprig fresh mint (about 6-8 leaves)
  • 1 lime wedge or wheel
  • 1 cup ice cubes

Directions

  1. Place the mint leaves in a large wine glass or tumbler. Gently bruise the leaves with a muddler or the back of a spoon to release their oils (do not shred them).
  2. Fill the glass generously with ice cubes.
  3. Pour the elderflower syrup (or liqueur) over the ice.
  4. Top with the chilled Prosecco and a splash of club soda.
  5. Stir gently to combine the ingredients without losing too much carbonation.
  6. Garnish with the lime wedge and an extra sprig of mint, if desired, and serve immediately.

Optional Tips / Variations

  • The “Hugo Royale”: Omit the club soda and replace it with more Prosecco or Champagne for a stronger, bubblier drink.
  • Citrus Swap: While lime is traditional, lemon slices can be used for a slightly sharper, brighter flavor profile.
  • Virgin Hugo: For a non-alcoholic mocktail, skip the Prosecco and use a non-alcoholic sparkling wine or simply increase the soda water and use elderflower cordial syrup.
